Naming Our New Home

So, we bought a boat. And it's basically perfect... with one minor exception.

She's named The Lady's Choice. And that's just so not us.

Luckily, this is a problem that can easily be remedied with some DMV paperwork and a little paint. All we had to do was decide on a new name.

We were really excited about coming up with an awesome name for our new boat. But where to begin? Did we want something meaningful? Funny? Punny?? At first, thinking of names was easy, we had a long list of ideas going in no time (and had quite a few laughs along the way). But then the weight of the task set in and we realized that finding the perfect name was going to be a lot harder than we thought.

Brian’s motto in life is “keep it light.” (And yes, this was inspired by Michael Douglas’ masterful performance as the aging perpetual bachelor in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past). So we were hoping to capture our fun and light-hearted outlook in a name. This yielded some interesting options, like:

Burrito Dreams

Taco Tuesday

Rum Snorkeling (an old inside joke from a trip to the Caribbean)

Madame President (2016 still hurts)

The 19th Amendment (OK, not light-hearted but #feminism)

But, we also believe in living life on our own terms. So maybe we should call the boat something like:

Adventure Awaits

Embrace The Journey

The Path Less Traveled

Would something classically nautical be more appropriate? I mean, who doesn’t love a good pun?

Knotty Yachties

Seas The Day

Or maybe we should get super deep and pick a more meaningful name. We felt really lucky to find our boat so easily (it’s actually really hard to score liveaboard slips) so we started googling words that meant explore, travel, and lucky in other languages. And we ended up with names like:

Trouvaille (a chance encounter with something wonderful)

Sonder (the recognition that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own).

Rame (something that is both chaotic and joyful at the same time)

Orenda (a mystical force present in all people that empowers them to affect the world or effect changes in their own lives)

None of these felt quite right.

But there was one name that we just kept coming back to. There were all kinds of reasons not to pick this name - it's really long, specific to a movie that most people either love or haven’t seen, and it's kind of goofy.

And yet, we just couldn’t get it out of our heads. So we decided to go all in with:

The Catalina Wine Mixer

Perfect, right?

Cue the Stepbrothers jokes about chopper sales and Derek's nut.

The Catalina Wine Mixer is our home, but she’s also a fun boat (not like a regular boat) where we plan to hang out with our favorite people and create tons of new memories. And we think this name captures that perfectly.

Besides, we’re all about keeping it light.

Oh, and in case you were wondering – our dinghy’s name is Dale – but you have to call him Dragon.
